Overnight camps in the Grand Erg Oriental can be arranged from both El Oued (Algeria) and Douz (Tunisia). Tunisian operators have the more developed infrastructure and are easier to book independently. Algerian camps tend to be smaller and require more advance coordination. The minimum rewarding duration is one night — enough to see the sunset, sleep under the stars, and walk the dunes at dawn. Bring warm clothing regardless of the season; desert nights are cold year-round.
Desert Camps
A story
Desert camps in the Grand Erg Oriental range from a tarp and a sleeping bag to elaborate tented setups with proper beds and catered meals. The experience of sleeping in the erg on a still night — when the temperature drops sharply and the stars come out with an intensity impossible to see from anywhere with electrical lighting — is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Most camps are positioned on the dune margins rather than deep in the erg; true isolation requires a multi-day journey by camel or 4WD.
