Douz — Tunisian Gateway

The main Tunisian access point for the Grand Erg Oriental, 135 kilometres southwest of Sfax. Douz has a well-developed infrastructure of camel trek operators, 4WD hire, and desert camps ranging from basic to comfortable. The town itself is unexceptional, but the logistics for getting into the erg are significantly easier from here than from the Algerian side. The dune margin begins about 3 kilometres south of the town centre; deeper desert access requires hiring a guide.

A story
Douz markets itself aggressively as the 'Gateway to the Sahara' — it is the main tourist entry point to the Grand Erg Oriental from the Tunisian side. The camel trek and 4WD excursion industry here is well developed and, by Saharan standards, accessible: you can show up in Douz without a guide or advance booking in the main season (October to April) and arrange a trek the same day. The Douz Festival of the Sahara, held each December, has been running since 1910 and features camel racing, fantasia horseback displays, and traditional music — it draws a large crowd but the spectacle is genuine.
