The Grand Erg Occidental is one of the great sand seas of the Sahara, covering some 80,000 square kilometres of southwestern Algeria with the textbook crescent dunes that visitors imagine when they imagine the desert. The eastern edge begins a short drive west of Timimoun and is one of the easier places in Algeria to step into the dunes proper without a multi-day expedition.
Local guides organise half-day, full-day and overnight trips by 4x4 — the long pistes around the village of Charouine, west of Timimoun, are the usual base for desert excursions. An overnight in the dunes, with a Tuareg-style camp and a sky empty of light pollution, is the experience to seek. Permits and a registered driver are required for desert travel; arrange these before leaving the town.
