The Surrounding Countryside

The landscape around Ouahigouya is characteristic Sahel: flat laterite plains broken by isolated rocky outcrops (inselbergs), dotted with baobabs, acacias, and the occasional sacred grove. During the dry season (November to May), the land is dusty and ochre-coloured; the brief rainy season (June–September) brings a flush of green that transforms the region.

The surrounding villages are predominantly Mossi, each organized around a compound of the local chief and a shared well or pump. Cycling out from town on the dirt tracks that connect villages is a rewarding way to see daily Sahel life — women pounding grain, children herding cattle, men repairing tools under shade trees. The landscape feels ancient and largely unchanged, which is both its beauty and its hardship.
