The Wagenya (or Genya) people have been fishing the lowest of the Boyoma Falls cataracts for centuries, using a unique system of wooden tripods anchored in the rapids that hold conical baskets in the rushing water. The fish — capitaine, tilapia and Congolese pike — that try to swim upstream are caught as they leap.
The village across the river from central Kisangani arranges paid visits, with a pirogue ride out across the calmer water above the falls and demonstrations of the basket-trap technique. Negotiate the price in advance with the village chief through your hotel or a guide. The trip is one of the great African travel experiences if you have made it this far.
