Mangrove Marine Park

Protected mangrove wetland at the Congo River mouth, one of the DRC's rare marine conservation areas.

The Mangrove Marine Park protects the brackish channels and muddy islands around the Congo River mouth. It is the ecological counterweight to Moanda's oil installations and beach traffic: a low, green world of mangrove roots, birds, fish nurseries, and tidal water.

Visits need local arrangement rather than casual wandering. Ask in Moanda about current access, boat availability, and conservation rules before going. The landscape is subtle rather than spectacular, but it explains why this short strip of coast matters.

A story
This is the only Ramsar-listed coastal wetland in the DRC, protecting a sliver of Atlantic mangrove habitat in a country better known for rainforest. Its importance is out of proportion to its size: the Congo has thousands of kilometres of river, but only a tiny window onto the sea.
