The Italian War Cemetery is the most monumental of El Alamein's Axis memorials, with a marble tower and long approach at Height 33. It commemorates thousands of Italian soldiers, both named and unidentified, from the North African campaign.
The site also gives open views across the surrounding country, which helps explain why small rises in the desert mattered so much in the fighting.
