Ahramat District

The district between the pyramids and central Giza, hotels, restaurants and touts

Ahramat (meaning "Pyramids" in Arabic) is the neighbourhood between the Giza Plateau's eastern perimeter and the main city — the strip of hotels, restaurants, souvenir bazaars, and travel agencies that has grown up to service visitors to the monuments. It is not a beautiful area, but it is the practical base for the pyramids visit: most mid-range hotels are here, the main bus stops and microbus routes pass through, and the road toward the plateau entrance runs through its centre.

The bazaars along the main strip sell the full range of Egyptian souvenir goods — alabaster figurines, papyrus paintings, cartouche jewellery, shawls, and pharaonic kitsch of every kind. Prices start high and are expected to be negotiated down, often dramatically. The serious shopping for quality Egyptian crafts is better done in Cairo's Khan el-Khalili bazaar, but if you need a souvenir quickly, Ahramat has it.
