Dokki, in northern Giza, is one of the more interesting middle-class residential and commercial neighbourhoods in greater Cairo. It has a higher density of art galleries, small cafes, and independent restaurants than the tourist-heavy areas, along with a large number of foreign embassies and cultural institutes. The neighbourhood is quieter and more residential than downtown Cairo but has good connections on the Metro.
The Egyptian Centre for International Cultural Cooperation is based here, and during the cultural season the area's galleries and institutes host exhibitions, film screenings, and concerts. For anyone staying more than a few days in Giza who wants to see something of Egyptian urban life beyond the pharaonic circuit, Dokki is where to walk in the evenings.
