Umm al Dabadib

Remote Roman fortress and aqueduct site on the old desert caravan route.

Umm al Dabadib is a Roman frontier site deep in the desert north of Kharga. The fortress, tombs, settlement remains, and waterworks helped control movement along the oasis routes and make the desert border feel concrete rather than abstract.

This is not a casual taxi stop. You need a guide and a suitable off-road vehicle, but for travellers interested in Roman Egypt beyond the Nile, it is one of Kharga's most rewarding excursions.
