The Akuapem Ridge runs northeast from Aburi through a series of small towns, each perched high enough to look out over the Accra plains to the south and the forested hills to the north. From various spots along the ridge road, on a clear day you can see all the way to the ocean, a flat silver line some 35 kilometres away.
The views are best in the early morning before harmattan haze builds up. The ridge road itself is worth driving slowly — it passes through towns famous for woodcarving, with workshops and roadside stalls displaying furniture, masks, and ceremonial stools in the Ashanti tradition. The craftsmen are generally happy to let you watch the work in progress. Aburi is the most visited point on the ridge, but Mampong, Akropong, and Krobo further northeast each have their own character and fewer visitors.
