Akosombo Port

The port is the southern terminus of all Lake Volta traffic. From here the slow passenger ferry Yapei Queen (when it is running) starts its two-day journey north to Yeji, stopping at the dispersed lakeside villages along the way — one of the great long-haul boat journeys still operating in West Africa. The schedule is famously unreliable; check at the VRA office in town before relying on it.

The port itself is a small, working harbour. Cargo, the Dodi Princess cruise boat, and a fleet of smaller craft come and go through the day. It is the easiest place to arrange a short charter and the most atmospheric corner of Akosombo: warehouses, fishermen mending nets, the lake hills lifting away on every side.
