A smaller, quieter version of Busua a few kilometres east along the coast. Butre has its own long beach (less developed, less busy), a tidal lagoon you can hire a canoe across, and the romantic ruin of Fort Batenstein — built by the Dutch in 1656 and now mostly tumbled walls and brick arches reclaimed by the bush above the village.
The walk up to the fort takes ten minutes and is rewarded by a sweeping view of the lagoon, the beach, and the coast curving away towards Busua and Dixcove. Boatmen on the lagoon take visitors across to the beach side for a small fee. Combine with Busua in a single walking day.
