At the edge of the forest, just outside the village of Fiema, is a small cemetery used exclusively for the monkeys. When one of the sacred colobus or mona monkeys dies, the community holds a ceremony and buries it here with full funeral rites — a reflection of the deep spiritual significance the animals hold in Bono belief.
The cemetery is modest: wooden markers, a quiet clearing, the sounds of the forest. But it encapsulates something rare — a living tradition that has kept these animals safe for centuries not through legislation or enforcement, but through genuine reverence. Most visitors find it unexpectedly moving. Your guide will show you the site as part of the standard sanctuary tour.
