Fort Witsen is one of the smaller European forts on Ghana's coast, built by the Dutch in 1665 on the site of an earlier Swedish trading post. Its history is tied to the brief Swedish presence on the Gold Coast and the long contest between European powers for coastal trade.
It is a compact, specialist stop rather than a major castle like Elmina or Cape Coast. For travellers already in Sekondi, it adds another layer to the old harbour town's colonial history.
