Ile de Kassa

Kassa is the largest and busiest of the three main islands, and the place most Guineans head to on a Friday afternoon. The pirogue from Conakry lands at Soro, the main village, where a cluster of beach bars do grilled fish, attieke, and cold Skol all weekend.

Walk south along the coast and the crowds thin out. The interior is rolling and partly forested, with old colonial mining tracks for the bauxite that was once dug here. The water on the eastern side is calmer and good for swimming; the west side faces the open Atlantic and gets some surf.

A story
Kassa was the source of much of the bauxite that fed Conakry's aluminium industry in the 1950s. The old French mining infrastructure can still be glimpsed in places along the interior tracks.
