The Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Nyeri sits a couple of kilometres south of the town centre at Mathari, on the site of one of the oldest Consolata Missionary stations in East Africa. The Consolata Fathers, an Italian missionary order, arrived in Nyeri in 1902 and built up a substantial mission complex of school, hospital, and church that helped make the region one of the most Christian parts of Kenya.
The cathedral itself is a substantial twentieth-century church in pale stone, with a long nave and a high pitched roof. Sunday Mass is conducted in Kikuyu, Swahili, and occasionally English, with strong choral singing. The grounds are pleasantly green and quiet; the views toward Mount Kenya, on a clear morning, are superb.
