Gakere Road is Nyeri's main commercial spine, running from the bus park down through the centre of town. It is lined with mid-century shopfronts in pale plaster and corrugated iron, interspersed with newer concrete blocks. Supermarkets, hardware stores, mobile-money kiosks, bookshops, and small restaurants all pile in along its length.
It is not a sight in any conventional sense, but a walk down Gakere is the best way to feel the texture of a Kenyan highland town. Mornings, when matatu touts shout destinations and farmers bring produce in from the surrounding hills, are the liveliest time. Evenings are quieter — the highlands cool quickly after dusk, and the town shuts down early.
