Mwene Ndega Grove

A sacred fig and mugumo (wild fig) grove about 3 km from Runyenjes town, traditionally regarded as the ancestral home of the Embu people. The Embu — a Bantu-speaking community closely related to the Kikuyu and Meru — trace their origins to this area of the central highlands, and the grove is a site of cultural memory and occasional ceremonial use. Visits should be made respectfully and, ideally, with a local guide who can explain the oral traditions associated with the site.

The grove is a remnant of the indigenous forest that once covered much of the Embu highlands before farming and settlement cleared most of it. The large trees provide shade and a sense of age and place that the surrounding farmland cannot. For travellers interested in the cultural landscape of the central highlands, a visit here gives context for understanding the Embu people's connection to this particular stretch of territory between the Thuchi and Tana rivers.
