Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary

Fenced sanctuary protecting Kenya's recovering black rhino population

A fenced sanctuary of 70 square kilometres in the northern part of the park, protecting one of Kenya's most significant black rhino populations. Sightings require patience and some luck — the bush is thick — but rangers know the area well and guided drives within the sanctuary significantly improve your chances. Black rhinos are critically endangered, and this is one of the few places in East Africa where you have a realistic chance of seeing one in the wild. Contact the park headquarters at Mtito Andei to arrange a visit inside the sanctuary fence.

A story
When the sanctuary was established in 1986, fewer than 20 black rhinos remained in the whole of Tsavo — the result of catastrophic poaching in the 1970s and 80s that wiped out an estimated 95% of the park's population. The sanctuary's success, growing the population to over 70 individuals, is one of the more remarkable conservation recoveries in East Africa.
