The Jebel Akhdar — "Green Mountain" — is a limestone plateau rising above the Gulf of Sirte, roughly between Benghazi and the ancient city of Cyrene. It's the most fertile part of Libya, with pine forests, juniper, and wildflowers in spring. The ancient Greek cities of Cyrenaica — Cyrene, Apollonia, Tolmeitha — are all within reach of this region.
Before 2011 the area was popular for hiking and escaping the coastal heat. Access to the east, including Jebel Akhdar, has been severely restricted by the conflict and the presence of the Libyan National Army (LNA) under General Haftar. Travelers should get up-to-date security advice before attempting to visit.
