Fezzan Regional Museum

The Fezzan Regional Museum in Sebha is the main repository for the archaeological and ethnographic heritage of the region. The collection covers the Garamantian civilisation — the ancient Saharan people who built an elaborate underground irrigation system, the foggara, across the Fezzan more than two thousand years ago — as well as pre-Islamic rock art, caravan-era artefacts and traditional Tuareg material culture.

The museum is small and the presentation is basic, but the material it holds is genuinely significant: the Fezzan was a major crossroads of trans-Saharan trade for centuries, and many of the objects here passed through on routes connecting the Mediterranean to sub-Saharan Africa. A visit provides context that makes the surrounding desert more legible.
