Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus is Cyrene's most monumental ruin, with massive column drums and reconstructed elements giving a sense of the scale the sanctuary once had. Even fragmented, it feels ambitious and imposing.

Its setting is part of the drama. The temple stands apart from the densest part of the ancient city, so the approach gives you time to absorb its size. Bring water and sun protection; this is not a shaded museum experience.

A story
The Temple of Zeus at Cyrene was one of the largest Greek temples in North Africa. It suffered damage in antiquity, was restored under the Romans, and was damaged again by a major earthquake in AD 365.
