German War Cemetery

The German War Cemetery stands on the edge of Tobruk in a heavy stone memorial structure. More than 6,000 German soldiers from the North African campaign are commemorated here, making it one of the most important Axis war cemeteries in Libya.

The architecture is stark and defensive, almost like a small desert fort. It is worth visiting alongside the Commonwealth cemetery because the contrast says a great deal about how different nations chose to remember the same campaign.

A story
The German cemetery was inaugurated in 1955 after remains from battlefield graves across the region were gathered into one memorial. Its fortress-like form feels deliberately severe, a very different language of remembrance from the Commonwealth cemeteries.
