Tobruk War Cemetery

Tobruk War Cemetery is the main Commonwealth cemetery in the city, with rows of pale headstones marking soldiers who died in the fighting across the Tobruk area. It is a restrained, sobering place, especially after you have seen the bare desert around the town.

The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, though access and condition should always be checked before visiting. Come quietly, read the ages on the stones, and the scale of the campaign becomes painfully human.

A story
The siege of Tobruk lasted from April to December 1941, when Allied forces held the port against Axis attempts to take it. Australian troops who helped defend the perimeter became famous as the "Rats of Tobruk", a nickname first used as an insult and then worn with pride.
