Kasungu National Park covers around 2,000 sq km of miombo woodland, riverine forest, and grassy plains on the Zambian border west of Kasungu town. After decades of decline it is recovering — elephants have been re-introduced, anti-poaching effort has increased, and you stand a reasonable chance of seeing elephant, buffalo, sable antelope, roan, kudu, and a wide range of birds.
Lifupa Lodge inside the park is the main base for visitors, with chalets and a campsite overlooking a dam where wildlife comes to drink. Game drives and guided walks are arranged from there. The park is generally accessible May to November; the rains turn most of the tracks impassable.
