Manuscript Libraries

Family-held libraries with illuminated Arabic manuscripts from 13th century

Several private families in Chinguetti's old quarter have maintained collections of ancient Arabic manuscripts for generations — texts on Quranic interpretation, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and law, some dating back to the 13th century. A handful of these libraries welcome visitors; look for signs in the old medina or ask at your guesthouse. The manuscripts themselves are extraordinary: beautifully illuminated pages that survived centuries of desert heat, colonial disruption, and the steady creep of sand. Photography is sometimes permitted, sometimes not — ask first.
