New Town and Auberge Quarter

The lived-in side of Chinguetti, with most of the guesthouses and shops

On the western side of the dry wadi that splits the town in two, the "new town" is where most of Chinguetti's 4,000 or so inhabitants live, work and run businesses. Most of the auberges are here — single-storey compounds with thatched shade structures in a courtyard, cushions on the floor, and traditional Mauritanian three-glass tea served constantly. A handful of small shops sell water, bread, mineral salts for the dehydration, and the occasional Berber rug or silver jewellery.

This is also where the buses and shared 4WDs arrive and depart. Order any camel trip or 4WD trip into the desert through an auberge here rather than picking up a tout on the street; the prices are similar and the trips are far more reliably organised.
