Ben Amera Monolith (Day Trip)

Ben Amera is a massive granite inselberg rising dramatically from the flat desert about 100 km south of Zouerate, near the border with Western Sahara. At 633 metres above the surrounding plain, it is Africa's largest monolith and one of the most remarkable geological formations on the continent. The approach road is sandy piste requiring a 4x4; guided trips from Zouerate are possible, and the drive through open desert is itself worth the journey.

A second monolith, Ben Aicha, stands nearby — the two are sometimes called the "lovers" for their physical proximity. The light on the granite changes dramatically through the day, and the formations are particularly spectacular at sunset when the rock turns deep red and orange. Bringing enough water and fuel for a full desert day trip is essential; there are no facilities whatsoever en route.

A story
Ben Amera is Africa's largest monolith — a single mass of granite rising 633 metres above the desert floor. It is the world's second-largest monolith after Uluru in Australia. The comparison is apt in more than size: both are ancient, isolated rock masses in vast flat desert, and both inspire a similar sense of geological improbability.
