Flacq Sunday Market

The Sunday market at Centre de Flacq is the largest outdoor market in Mauritius and one of the most genuinely local experiences the island offers. It has been running for generations and draws people from across the east coast to buy and sell produce, spices, household goods, clothes, and street food. On Wednesdays a smaller version operates, but Sunday is the real event.

The atmosphere is lively and unperformative — this is where Mauritians shop, not tourists. You will find vendors selling tropical fruit, bundles of fresh spices, street food including dholl puri (flatbread with split pea filling, the island's unofficial national dish), roti, and Chinese-Mauritian snacks. Prices are a fraction of what you pay at resort shops. The market is walkable from the town centre and runs from early morning until early afternoon; arrive before 10am for the best selection and least heat.
