Île aux Cerfs

Île aux Cerfs is a small island in the lagoon off Trou d'Eau Douce, about 12 kilometres south of Flacq, and it is one of Mauritius's most visited attractions — with good reason. The island has several beaches in different states of development, from the busy main beach with water sports and bars to quiet coves accessible only by boat. The lagoon between the shore and the outer reef is extraordinarily clear and ranges in colour from pale turquoise to deep blue.

Boats from Trou d'Eau Douce run throughout the day and the crossing takes about 10 minutes. The island has restaurants, beach chairs for hire, water sports operators, and the Golf du Château golf course — but also enough space to escape the organised beach tourism if you walk far enough. Arrive early to avoid the noon crowds.

A story
Île aux Cerfs — Deer Island — takes its name from the deer that Dutch settlers released here in the 17th century. The Dutch introduced deer to Mauritius for hunting, and the animals eventually went feral. The deer are long gone from this island, but the name endures.
