Maheswarnath Mandir

The largest and oldest Hindu temple on Mauritius, in nearby Triolet

About 5 km south of Grand Baie in the village of Triolet, this is the oldest and largest Hindu temple in Mauritius. The compound holds five separate shrines around a central tank, dedicated to Shiva, Krishna, Hanuman, Ganesh, and Surya. The colour scheme — sky blue and white, then jolted by gold and saffron statuary — is unmistakable.

The temple is active and visited daily; festivals at Maha Shivaratri (February/March) draw pilgrims from across the island. Dress modestly, remove shoes at the gate, and ask before photographing the inner shrines. A small donation is expected.

A story
The temple was built in 1819 by Pandit Sajiwoolal, an indentured labourer who arrived from Bihar as part of the first wave of Indian migration to Mauritius. It predates the abolition of slavery on the island by sixteen years and was for decades the only stone Hindu temple south of the equator.
