Asilah Beach

A long Atlantic beach south of the medina, clean and uncrowded outside Moroccan summer holidays

Asilah's beach stretches south from the medina walls along a long arc of Atlantic coast. It is a broad, clean beach with a strong Atlantic swell — better for walking and watching the waves than swimming for most of the year, though conditions are calmer in summer. The beach is backed by dunes and low scrub for much of its length, with the whitewashed ramparts of the medina visible to the north.

In July and August the beach becomes considerably busier, with Moroccan families from Tangier and Rabat making Asilah a summer destination. At other times of year it is often nearly empty, which suits the town's prevailing mood of quiet elegance.

The section immediately below the sea walls — where the walls meet the sand — is the most photogenic stretch, particularly at sunset when the walls glow orange and the Atlantic is backlit. The beach continues south for several kilometres beyond the town, getting progressively quieter.
