The walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and, by Moroccan standards, refreshingly easy to navigate: two main streets run at right angles, with a grid of smaller lanes between. Designed in the 1760s by a French engineer for Sultan Mohammed III, it is one of the few North African medinas laid out on European lines. The whitewashed walls and sky-blue doors, the shaded souks around Avenue de l'Istiqlal, and the main square Place Moulay Hassan with its cafes are all within ten minutes' walk of each other.
