Camel Market

The camel market (souk des chameaux) operates on Saturday mornings alongside the main market, about a 15-minute walk north of Place Bir Anzarane. It is a working livestock market where camels are assessed, negotiated over, and sold — a transaction that can take hours and involves a great deal of shouted argument, inspection of teeth and hooves, and third-party mediation.

Unlike the general Saturday market, the camel souk rarely attracts tour groups, which means you can wander freely and watch proceedings without being hustled or surrounded. A few local men will happily pose with their camels for photographs if asked politely; a small tip is expected. Go between 8 and 11am before the heat makes the market disperse.
