Moussem des Fiançailles

The Moussem des Fiançailles, also called the Imilchil Marriage Festival, is held in late August or September in the village of Ait Amer, about 20 kilometres from Imilchil. It is traditionally a gathering of the Berber Ait Haddidou tribe, where engagements are agreed and divorces formalised under the eye of family elders.

Expect three days of trading, music, ahidous dancing in long lines of brightly-dressed women and men, and an enormous livestock and goods market. The exact dates shift each year — check locally before travelling. The festival is now well known, so expect tour groups and the recent overlap with a "world music" festival, but it remains the most distinctive cultural event in the central High Atlas.

A story
The marriage market is now partly a performance for visitors, but it still serves a real function: in a region where families are scattered across mountain passes, the moussem is one of the few times Ait Haddidou clans gather in one place to settle engagements, trade livestock, and dance the ahidous.
