Erg Lihoudi

Erg Lihoudi is a much smaller dune field than Chigaga, lying just a couple of kilometres from M'Hamid itself. This makes it ideal for a shorter excursion — a walk or a short camel ride rather than an overnight trip. The dunes are modest by Saharan standards, but they are genuinely sandy desert, and at dawn or dusk the light is beautiful.

For visitors with limited time, or those who want a taste of the desert without committing to a full overnight trip, Erg Lihoudi is the practical choice. It can be reached on foot from the edge of the village in under an hour.

A story
Erg Lihoudi — the 'dunes of the Jews' — takes its name from a Jewish community that reportedly camped here centuries ago while fleeing persecution. Morocco's Jewish communities historically had a significant presence in the Draa Valley towns, and the name is a reminder that the Sahara was once a trade corridor connecting diverse peoples.
