Port of Mohammedia

The working port at Mohammedia is split between an oil terminal — most of Morocco's imported crude lands here for the SAMIR refinery — and a small fishing harbour that supplies the city's restaurants. Visitors come for the latter: a row of fish stalls and grills along the harbour edge where you can pick your fish whole from the morning's catch and have it grilled while you wait.

The action picks up in late morning when the boats come in and again at sunset when the local cafés fill up. The walk along the breakwater gives a good view back across the bay to the kasbah and a sense of how the original Portuguese trading post still shapes the city. Watch your step — the working areas are not fenced off and trucks come and go.
