Three hours by camel northwest of N'Guigmi lies the Tal Desert — an area of tall, pristine dunes and absolute silence that sees almost no visitors. The landscape is classic deep Sahara: red sand, shifting dunes up to 30 metres high, and a stillness that is hard to find anywhere on earth. The dunes are reportedly accessible from N'Guigmi in a day, making this a genuine desert experience without the need for a multi-day expedition.
Camels and a guide can be hired in N'Guigmi; negotiate prices and duration in town before setting out. This excursion is for seasoned travellers who are comfortable in desert conditions. Bring enough water for the full round trip, a hat, and sunblock — the sun is intense even in the cooler months. The best seasons are November through February.
