The Zengou Quarter lacks the grand Hausa architecture of the old Birni (the Sultan's quarter), but it more than compensates with energy. This is Zinder's working-class heart -- a maze of narrow lanes between simple mudbrick houses, where tailors, dyers, and metalworkers set up shop in the open air. The indigo-dyed cloth stalls are worth seeking out. Come in the morning when the quarter is at its busiest, and don't be shy about wandering -- people are generally welcoming and curious about visitors.
