Central Market

Sokoto's Central Market is the place to see the city working at street level: grains, onions, leather goods, household supplies, and traders arriving from smaller towns across the northwest. It is hot, crowded, and often more revealing than any formal monument.

Go in the morning, when business is liveliest and temperatures are still manageable. Keep your camera down unless you have permission; in Sokoto, a little restraint goes a long way.
