The Sultan's Palace is the symbolic centre of Sokoto, guarded, ceremonial, and still very much in use. Its importance is not just architectural; this is the seat of a traditional institution whose authority reaches far beyond the city.
Visitors should not expect to wander freely through the compound. View the palace respectfully from outside unless you have arranged access through local contacts. During festivals and major religious occasions the area can be spectacular, but also crowded and sensitive.
