Mogadishu's historical core contains some of the oldest surviving Islamic architecture in sub-Saharan Africa, including mosques from the 13th century and coral-stone houses that recall the city's medieval Arab trading heritage. Security conditions are severe and most of this area is accessible only to those with professional security arrangements, but the sites themselves are extraordinary and worth knowing about.
