Burao Independence Memorial

Spot where the Burao Conference declared Somaliland's independence in 1991

Burao is the place where modern Somaliland was born. In May 1991, after the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in Mogadishu, clan elders and the Somali National Movement met here and declared the territory's withdrawal from the Somali union. The site is marked by a modest memorial in the city centre — small by international standards but heavy with meaning for locals.

Pair the visit with a conversation: most older residents have a clear memory of the war and the declaration, and Somalilanders are generally happy to talk about why they consider their country independent. The diplomatic recognition has not followed, but the conviction is unmistakable.

A story
On 18 May 1991, the Grand Conference of the Somali National Movement and northern clans concluded in Burao with a declaration ending the union with Somalia and re-establishing the independence of the former British Somaliland. Few countries have formally recognised the new state, but 18 May is the national day and the Burao declaration remains its founding moment.
