Burao Livestock Market

One of the largest livestock markets in the Horn of Africa

The livestock market is the reason Burao matters. Camels, goats, and sheep are driven in from across central Somaliland and traded by Somali herders and exporters in a dusty, noisy open ground on the edge of town. Most of the animals are bound onward to the port of Berbera and then by ship to the Arabian Peninsula, where demand is highest in the weeks before the Hajj.

Visitors are welcome but should go with a local guide and arrive early — by mid-morning the place is in full swing, by midday it is winding down. Ask permission before photographing people. The market is not built for tourists, and that is exactly the point.

A story
At the height of the live export season the Burao market handles tens of thousands of animals a day, most bound for ports on the Gulf of Aden and onward to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. The livestock trade accounts for a large share of Somaliland's GDP, and this dusty market is one of the engines of the country's informal economy.
