The East London Museum is the city's strongest indoor sight. It is famous for its link to the coelacanth, the prehistoric-looking fish thought extinct until a specimen was identified from the nearby Chalumna River mouth in 1938.
The museum is broader than that single story. Its collections cover regional natural history, Xhosa beadwork, maritime material and the mixed human history of the Eastern Cape. It is exactly the kind of museum that makes a practical port city more interesting.
