Camdeboo National Park almost surrounds Graaff-Reinet, which is unusual enough to shape the whole town. The park protects dry Karoo plains, mountain slopes and Nqweba Dam, with Cape mountain zebra, buffalo, antelope and many birds in the game-viewing areas.
Most visitors combine it with the Valley of Desolation, but the lower loops are worth doing if you want more than the viewpoint. The scenery is spare rather than lush: thorn scrub, open light, dust, water birds at the dam and mountains that turn blue in the distance.
