Valley of Desolation

Dramatic Camdeboo viewpoint over dolerite columns and the vast Karoo plains.

The Valley of Desolation is the reason many travellers detour to Graaff-Reinet. A road climbs from the edge of town into Camdeboo National Park and ends near viewpoints over sheer dolerite columns, some rising around 120 metres from the valley floor. Beyond them, the Great Karoo stretches away in dry, rippling layers.

The visit is simple but powerful: drive up, walk the short paths between viewpoints, and linger. Early morning is quiet; sunset is warmer and more dramatic. In hot weather, bring water and do not underestimate the sun, even for the short walks.
