The Provost Prison

The Provost Prison is a small but unusual 1830s military prison on the old Drostdy grounds in Grahamstown. It was built after the Sixth Frontier War as part of a fortified barracks complex ordered by Governor Sir Benjamin D'Urban.

Its interest is architectural as much as historical: the prison follows a Jeremy Bentham-style panopticon idea, with cells arranged for surveillance. It is a worthwhile stop for visitors tracing Grahamstown's colonial and frontier-war history.
