Route 67

Route 67 is a public art trail that runs from the Donkin Reserve down through the old town to the harbour, with 67 artworks installed along the way — one for each year of Nelson Mandela's public life. The works range from large-scale murals and mosaics to sculptures and paving installations, and they vary considerably in quality, but the best of them are genuinely striking. The trail takes an easy hour to walk end to end.

The highlight is the massive mosaic at the bottom of the route near the harbour, but the journey itself is the point: the trail passes through the old terraced streets of the hill, down past the city hall, and into the waterfront precinct. Start at the Donkin Reserve at the top and walk downhill — it's far more pleasant in that direction, and you end up at the waterfront where there are places to sit and eat. A free self-guided map is available at the tourism office near the harbour.
